No Kings! Indianola, Iowa
Small town Iowans resist fascism...
Maybe 300-350 locals gathered in Indianola this morning to protest the MAGA regime. The woman on the left above told me she wants anyone but Ashley in the Senate.
Above is a video I took from across the street. It seemed to me that we received more favorable honks and waves than negative. My friend Ray Walton agreed, telling me he thought that about 80% of reactions were favorable.
Of course, some MAGA types in diesel pickups drove by “rolling coal,” obviously compensating for one or more of their shortcomings.
Below is a TikTok video I made from closer up.

Below is a video I took of a woman who is a nurse who handed me a red stocking cap pin. She explains the significance of this important symbol of resistance—”crafticism,” I believe she called it! Resistance led by women, right Marianne Fons??
You will have to watch the video (worth it!) because I don’t have time to transcribe it, because I’m off to the No Kings! event at the Capitol in Des Moines.
I’ll see some of you there!
Thanks, everyone!
Join roughly three dozen members of the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative in Storm Lake on April 23 and 24 as we swap ideas by day and gather for music at night. On Thursday evening, the Weary Ramblers take the stage, followed the next night by a circle of our own writers and musicians at legendary Byron’s in Pomeroy.
Evening events are open to paid subscribers (free, with guests welcome for a small fee). Not yet supporting a writer? Subscribe to as many as fit your budget and brighten someone’s week. We are committed to keeping participation open to talent regardless of means, and that promise depends on readers who step forward to help sustain the work.
If this community matters to you and you’re able to lend a hand, we would love to have you with us.
Let us know if you can join us by using these two RSVP forms.
My column will always be free, but please consider upgrading to paid if you can afford it.
I’m a proud member of the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative. Please check out our work here. I also publish Cedar Creek Nature Notes, about Violet the Dog and my adventures on our morning walks at Cedar Bluffs Natural Area in Mahaska County, Iowa.
And I’m now on TikTok, believe it or not. Here you go…I’m publishing videos and stories that you might not see here.

Just back from one of Arizona's many gatherings of The Resistance. Excellent in every way. Every age, race, or other demographic you can name. This was in a 'maga part of town.' Ha!
