Snow removal is truly some of the most underappreciated work done in the Midwest. I leave for work at 3:30 AM, so while I too get to see the occasional fox, I also get to see these teams out doing work most of the morning commuters won't think twice about. My guess is that's how they prefer it.
First, at some point in the last year, someone stole several loads of rock from a road in Monroe County. They dug through the "delicate road surface" in several places, causing the Monroe County Engineer to worry about they would rebuild that surface.
Second, there is a tradition that you will not find in any farm lease. The person who leases the farm is responsible for clearing the driveway if the owner cannot do it. They will also shovel sidewalks and remove snow from vehicles if the owner is unable to do that.
