Thank you, Dr Bob for the update. This is good news. I also appreciate you using the front doors of our church, Second Reformed on your post. We are a welcoming and affirming congregation.
I wonder how our former President Trump reflected the essence of the Bible in the eyes of Pella's political leadership...since Trump did so well in the city. Perhaps it's just sufficient that Trump's not gay.
If the Pella ordinance regarding adult entertainment is indeed a flashpoint for ultra conservative right wing "Christians," then it looks to me like it gives them indecent exposure. Thanks for the update.
Thanks for the new info, Bob. Not only is it good news about the community not supporting the market, but it enlightens my view of "the farming community."
Most viewers watching National nightly news have no idea what President Biden is talking about when he brings up the American Rescue Plan. It’s continually glossed over in his remarks leaving nearly everyone to guess what in the hell he might be talking about, because they have no idea what it is, or how it affects them, or anyone. It’s 6:00 pablum.
Biden needs to get on TV and start talking about what he and the Legislature are doing and give kudos to supporting Republicans, on his policies. Americans, being the idiotic ignorant people we are, need everything outlined for us and how we are benefitting from it. Republicans, such as our ugly Governor, Kim Reynoldscrap, knows how to get her message out and keep bullshitting Iowans how her 10th Century progressive ideas are good for the populace. Feed the rich. Kill the poor. The bottom line is that she does a fantastic job of getting people to believe that her inhumane ideals are wonderful progressive societal values and people believe what they keep hearing.
Didn’t the Democrats learn anything from Ronald Reagan? Why are they not clearly outlining progressive policy and demonstrating the resulting benefits, instead of getting bogged down in fighting about the merit of family values of a 1947 Disney Classic. Ignore it and let their freak flag fly!
Thank you. I was raised in a Republican family. I broke ranks two years ago publicly (and before that it it was making me sick to my stomach to be beholden to toe the line). Boy, the backlash was nasty. Because of that and other issues I no longer have any relationship whatsoever with any family members. There was much more than just this.
My distain for what I was having to publicly endorse put my stomach in knots and I felt I’ll whenever I was with them. Privately I had reregistered. My freedom was worth my mental health.
I still don’t understand how they think that Reynolds is good for Iowa. There is a family farm in Delaware county that we have a farmer with a degree in agriculture from ISU run. I try to pick up bits of farm news and enjoy the U.S.Farm Report. I dumped cable two months ago though, and am not able to pick up channels via antenna. So no TV news for me for the time being.
My freedom of choice to express my political views means so much more to me now that I’ve freed myself from a stodgy out-of-touch group of misaligned individuals. Their carrots and punishments for my decisions that were dangled in front of me can’t touch me anymore. That’s not how relationships should be.
Farmers seeing people as people, illustrates that there is the hope to get the agrarian populations such as the LGTBQ community, and others, as consumers, and people, first. Rather than than Republican targets manipulating their votes, getting the Democratic Party to start focusing on the farmers bottom line would surely spread a more important message to red state voters than divisive hate mongering Republican targeting. Farmers care about money in the long run. It’s their number one need and priority.

Thanks Sherril, I couldn't think of a better image to portray a welcoming Pella.

To many Trump was "sent by God." And they say "the Lord has often used flawed men to do his work." So, so many ways to rationalize it.
Good anthropology AND good reporting! And good news to boot.

Thank you, Bob, for telling us about this lovely, but powerful green shoot.
I am THRILLED this was nipped in the bud. Thanks for reporting on it Bob.
Looks like they may have to move their brand of religion out in the country somewhere.

Thanks for covering this Bob. Nice to see this type of outcome and have it reported. A good example to share.

Love your analysis and passion. Thank you.

You are very courageous. Must be difficult. thank you.
Thank you for covering this. Good to hear the townspeople decided on a more inclusive approach.

Thanks. Good point. It's begging to happen. A year ago April I wrote this for the NY Times. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/26/opinion/biden-trump-democrats-rural-america.html
