Here is the real question: The President is obligated to uphold the constitution and defend it against all enemies, foreign and domestic. He is violating his oath of office! Why isn't he being impeached! And when the Vice President takes over and tries the same thing, he too should be impeached! Each and everyone that continues violating the constitution should find themselves in the same prediciment until someone stops with this madness!
Honestly, I think another potential reason the Iowa congressional cohort isn't talking is that they weren't briefed on these steps, they're as much in the dark as others. Trump and Musk don't care about congress.
OK, that's not a shocker. She's knows her job, esp after the Hegseth nomination. I notice she's chair of the Senate DOGE committee (is that like a pep club?), so I'm sure as she's learning that Musk's brownshirts are taking over the federal government, she's totally on board with that too.
[The fact that Iowa Republicans have little comment on this fiasco is proof that they are either all in on the tearing down or too spineless to speak up]
Thanks Dave. I was honored to serve in the Biden administration. But in that role, I wasn't able to express myself so freely. That's the job. No complaints. But there is a certain amount of pent up insights and passion that I'm ready to let fly.
Yes, I have missed writing with him. hard for me to believe, but we conceived of writing this about 2 yesterday afternoon and finished it this morning. With meetings in between tag teaming it. It's a joy.
👍Good summary of a plan with no implementation and/or communications strategy. It is no wonder it is being withdrawn! It just cost the American taxpayers more than we can probably measure.
You are right on the money! The cost of Republicans efforts to save money means billions will be spent on dealing with the chaos rather than on building roads, supporting public safety, responding to H5N1 (bird flu), SBA loans to small businesses, the list goes on and on. Having just spent 3 years proudly working along with federal public servants, I can tell you there are opportunities for improvement and savings. But the costliest, most inefficient parts of delivering service to the American public was when the work of public servants crashed into the services provided by private sector contracts meant to create business like efficiencies. More to come on that.
Kimberly Grandstaff said of the 140 employees maybe no job 'food $$$ (??
either poorly paid job choice or didn't save for the unexpected??), no child care'. If no job don't need child care.
In regard of Iowa not getting gobs of Fed money then good thing Governor Reynolds has worked to get our state in better financial shape!! democrat managed states might as well admit to their mistakes.
What do u want from Chuck, an answer that suits u? If tables were turned and it was a democrat president doing this and a democrat senator giving this statement would u say the same things? I'd bet u wouldn't!
In thinking about the statement in comments about only going after civic organizations, is that saying that non-profits are funded by taxpayer $$$?
Thanks Do. I'm not sure how to respond to all of this, but our state isn't in good financial shape--just wait till the bill comes due for all of the kids going to private school with no income cap and no accountability. And no accountability with respect to the education they are providing. Our budget is only as good as it is because of the federal money that came in under Biden. I want the truth from Chuckles, and I have been critical of Biden in the New York Times. Look at what Chuckles said and tell me that wasn't misdirection. Lots of non-profits are funded in part by taxpayer money. That's how services can sometimes be most efficiently administered without building up a larger infrastructure. Has happened under both parties for generations.
The private schools I've seen to a very good job of turning out good students. I do agree there should be accountability. I do have concern of private schools starting up to swindle this money.
I do have to ask, why are states, some next to us, in terrible financial shape since I would guess they got $$ slow joe also?
by no income cap I mean that if you made 10 million dollars a year, you would still get taxpayer dollars to send your kid to private schools with taxpayer money. private schools here seem to do a good job too, but how do we really know? the kids don't have to take academic assessments like public school kids do. it's a scam. I have enough trouble keeping track of iowa's budget
Why segregate against what people make, we don't when we send to public schools and state gives $$/student. High amt of property taxes go to school district where property is located. I think of private schools that have been teaching students for many yrs like Waterloo Columbus, Hillcrest Academy {(formerly Ia Mennonite), Fairfield Christian, Mt Pleasant Christian, St James Parochial School (Washington, IA) to name a few and to best of my knowledge very good schools. I didn't realize they don't have to take academic assessments. I, personally, don't feel they are a scam. I could agree with possibility of private schools coming out of the woodwork where academic assessment is needed.
I thought the money following students to private schools was a major portion of what the regular amt was paid by state. The remainder stayed with the school they would've gone to. So how is it an increase for the cost to the state? I may be totally mistaken.
What I felt what chucky saying was normal for the situation, as politics is today, and if totally reversed then would u say the same thing? Then congratulations. May have been critical of old slow joe, on something which was totally warranted for him quite often.
I did not but glad to learn that many non-profits are partially funded with tax money. Unfortunately in my limited experience I've learned of the ones that pay pretty hefty salary's to those managing the funds. I have/do sat/sit on a few non-profit boards that get no fed tax $$.
I read this, thank you. I like reading both views. I need to research who the '10' counties are, I don't know how rural Ia is getting left out of this. I know for fact that teachers in some private school are grossly underpaid compared to public but that is their choice to help out. I personally know parents that send their children to private because of smaller classes, they like the structure better and religious reasons. To me it doesn't take much to know that inflation expenses have been very hard for private schools. I would believe they haven't been able to raise tuition maybe as much as needed or risk losing students. I find it hard to believe a major exodus from public schools for amt of private schools currently at this time but for every one student that goes that helps the teachers in public for class size.
30 yrs ago when our first went to kindergarden our public school was 1/2 days. We felt he needed all day, and he did, so we paid to send to private for that yr.. We thoroughly like the structure, morning prayers and he liked it. To save $$ school used used paper for the children to draw on. All our children went to public school and all my grandchildren attend public at this time.
Reportedly, MM told a college professor at Central that the freeze has been reversed for now because it results in too much confusion. I did hear KR come all out for the freeze because we need to get rid of DEI in all aspects.
I think it was Dahlia Lithwick making the point that for there to be a constitutional crisis, you have to have at least two bodies of government in opposition to one another relative to their interpretations of the constitution. From her perspective, since Trump is essentially in control of all parts of the Federal Government, we instead have a constitutional failure. Interesting perspective.
Going after small potatoes like civic organizations, but let's not touch Big Pharma, big ag, big business. They know what they are doing & they don't care. Demented. Egregious. Immoral. DEI for the magats

I see that earlier today Mike Peterson at KMA got ernst to talk. She says trump was right. https://www.kmaland.com/news/ernst-trump-was-right-in-freezing-federal-funds/article_56ecd214-dfe1-11ef-bac0-8f7379bc2782.html

It's both. Our representatives are failing us.
Instead of driving -
the bus, Trump & his pals are -
slashing the tires.
At each election we must vote against anyone who has supported this irresponsible bully.
Those are a lot of teeth showing in that photo. There is something so very weird about it. I can't quite put my finger on it (ew).
Ohhhhh, maybe this is why they aren’t responding to my letters. 🙄
Great to see Matt on here sharing his expertise.

What meant by 'no income cap'?

Yes, it is frozen. for. now.

Great point!
Thrre won't be any pointless/wasted spending our renaming the Gulf of Mexico/military bases, will there??? Ha!
The New York Times and the Washington Post report that the freeze was rescinded due to the uproar across the country. Thanks for helping make it happen! Continue fighting. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/01/29/us/trump-federal-freeze-funding-news#federal-freeze-grants
Power to the people!
