You’ re the best! Thanks for the Fisher coverage. As a member of CCI and the STC school district most affected by his so called Christian school I appreciate all you have said. If his interest is in children, he should probably explain why the location of his new school lacks any playground space. Sounds more like a robot factory. His behavior has also inspired Jennifer Wrage to run as another Democrat against him. She will be retiring from teaching and feels called to jump into politics. Who does that except a true public servant. Two great choices in our House District.
Berleen, thank you! Please keep us informed how things are going in the district with respect to the new school. Great news about Jennifer! I didn't know at the time I published this morning or I would have mentioned her. The Gazette reports that John Anderson of Tama is also running as a Democrat against Fisher. I've added an addendum to the column with the correction. Thanks again!
Thank you, as always, for your reporting. I love that Senator Weiner is using the proposed Religious Freedom Restoration Act as an argument against the immigration bill. I have been trying to get Rep. Gary Mohr, my representative from Bettendorf who is usually fairly moderate, to explain his support for the RFRA. Silence.
Great news Tommy Hexler is running. He could be Iowa's Maxwell Frost.
Thank you Bob and thank you to all the advocates in the state for tracking all these heinous pieces of legislation AND showing up to fight against this trifecta that occupies our government. Tommy will be a great legislator as will the many folks that are stepping up to be public servants.
The disregard of public input from these legislators is astounding. It’s as if there are motives other than public service and integrity guiding their decisions (!)
Thank you Bob for continuing to tell us these stories.
It always amazes me how they can hear 30-50 people speak out with logic and passion about how bad a bill is and they don't care. They are answering to someone else--certainly not their constituents. Thanks, Jim.
Thanks, Bob. I had heard of this bill, but didn’t realize it was being discussed Tuesday. I am so glad you and others did. When our legislators are making law, the sole purpose of which is to create fear and keep us from helping newcomers to our community, something is seriously wrong.
Thanks also for the heads up on Tommy Hexler. I will reach out to his campaign. I find it so hopeful that there are still people willing to enter the fray in service of the community.
From the prospective of a rural satelite small town resident, in the far reaches of Iowa when compared to the actions happening over 100 miles away in Des Moines, These kindof hearings need much more reporting! Simple things are simply pushed through with nary a whimper, there just isn't enough people to make a reasonable argument to stop bad legislation when the only time it is actually heard is in a committee meeting far removed fromthe people it effects! An example: the bill that passed doing away with hotel insoections, with an epidenic of bed bugs one would think they would increase the number of inpsections and the number of inspectors, not doaway with inspections all together! Not only that, but the number of places meth labs have been discovered also include Hotel/motel rooms! Endangering the publics health and safety who use these rooms simply for what they are intended! Thanks for sharing something that needs more perview than what these monkeys in charge want to give it, but one would think the people and not the lobbist should control what comes up in the legislature! Certainly that is the case for school boards with no time to set their budgets because of the foot draging in Des Moines!!!
You make a very good case for why folks across the state must support their local newspapers (what's left of them) so that the malfeasance of our legislators (and governor) is exposed.
Yes, we need more local news. I am grateful to the hard working reporters who do cover the legislature. They do a great job. More of them from across the state are needed.
Thank you for reporting about this Bob. I signed the CCI petition, knowing those legislators would ignore it. But I wanted them to know that we know and are watching closely.
Thank you, Bob, for your reporting. I am on the board of CCI and I appreciate your focus on the needs of rural Iowans. I am a Des Moines resident and I deeply care about the devastation of our rural communities by corporate interests in our state. We are all in this together. I know all of us at CCI regardless of where we live or our background value our rural neighbors and support them in saving their communities.

Bob, would you please tell me where to read more about how capitalism reinforced or reinforces white supremacy?
Here is a start, but there are lots of resources on it. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/05/25/is-capitalism-racist

Try reading this. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/05/25/is-capitalism-racist. I love America. Trumpers hate it. Just listen to your god. Just because he dry-humps the flag doesn't make him a patriot.
