The private school vouchers were a scam from the get go. When they 'crafted' that law, touting it a win for the lower and middle classes, they didn't promote this crucial detail. Starting this school year, the income requirement cap is gone. The wealthy will now be able to snatch up all the vouchers. Reverse Robin Hood. How shady can you get? There will certainly be animosity from public school kids when private school students steal their spots on a team or in a play.
Please make sure u revise about what ave person pays in school taxes. Even if renter the property tax for schools is taken into account the rent charged.
As long as their parents are tax payers in the district, and the school can count them as students so they get their state and federal funding, otherwise nay nay.
I have no doubt that this new law was, in part, a result of the Ft. Madison Community School District board vote to end all hosted shared athletic programs with the parochial school in the district in 2023. The rationale was the private school was receiving voucher monies and it could afford to use those new dollars to have their own sports programs. At the end of the day, the parochial school agreed to pay FMCSD $10,000 and the shared programs were resumed. Even the parochial schools realized the reality!
I hope they have a vaccine mandate to keep little private school Johnny from catching the DEI. And parents better be there watching practice everyday, cause they would be a perfect time to make the kid transgender.
Speaking as the mom of a now grown sports kid, how life-changing a good coach can be! Also, welcoming the stranger is a value which could be lived out.
I am a graduate of private schools, first grade through college. Far from a wealthy home, single nurse mom, father who did not provide child support, but neighborhood parochial schools that were decent and close to our home. My siblings and I all worked to pay our tuition, it was hundreds of dollars not thousands as now
I do not regret going there, but now I see how the educational stolen accounts are fostering a caste system. I have stopped all donations to my alma mater high school, they are excellent at fund raising.Boldly I ask the school's administration to see their IRS 990 forms, I was told they are not required to file. Something for Rob Sand to investigate. Yes, the ESA business is shady.
Keep in mind for a private, for profit school, somebody is making money from offering public school resources as part of their private educational experience that they are charging for.
I've observed some private schools over the years. They may use previous used paper for kids to draw on. They have big fund raisers and festivals to raise $$. It cost them same for buildings, utilities, ins. etc. My wife was on a parochial parents group yrs ago and let me tell u there was no extra money, just lots of parents proud and involved in their school. Normally teachers do not make as much as in a public. Most private schools have what a lot of parents want, 'PRAYER IN THE SCHOOL' Maybe a religion class, maybe a little better discipline, maybe a different dress code. Maybe some things parents aren't finding in todays public school and are willing to pay for it in private, more power to them. The graduates of these schools still have to take the same state tests as public to graduate and quite often do better than public.
Similar to the ‘right to work’ laws written to eliminate collective bargaining. The dues paying members have representation but the non-dues paying employees must receive the same benefits and union representation in any dispute. Odd the conservatives complain about ‘illegals’ getting benefits they don’t deserve but are silent on actual citizens gaming the system.
U might want to check again. I'd sure like to pay in school taxes that are in the $210*$220 range. I looked and it said for Ia 3.59% of INCOME. U forgot to mention the thousands and thousands individuals pay to school district(s) in property taxes! For me it's 40-45% of total, 2 different school districts.
I went to the link u posted and this what I saw. Sometimes if we question something we need to double check so readers don't get wrong info. It says on property tax bill which school district and how much and what % u pay to said school district. I just know what I pay also pay for area community colleges, extension, township fire protection, Iowa Dept of Ag and others before $$$ for family living. Tax, tax, tax.
The vouchers received to attend private schools take money from public schools. The students receiving those vouchers and defunding public schools then come back and consume even more resources of the public schools, leaving them in a precarious financial position and causing a vicious spiral that will destroy public schools. Private schools have no intention of taking on the responsibility of educating the students that they don't care to take. I also doubt they are OK with public school students showing up at their private schools to use their resources.
We homeschooled our kids and got no property tax break for our efforts, so some public school got a free ride.
The reason people want alternative schools is for the same reason people would not be happy with one brand of government built cars. Given the abysmal performance of so many school districts, a little competition could do a lot of good. Why is everyone so afraid of it?
It’s not a fair playing field. Private schools get to cherry pick their students. Republican states have been underfunding schools for a generations. there is also no accountability. If people want their kids to go to a private school, fine. Just pay for it. You don’t get a property tax break for roads you don’t drive on either.
I don't have kids in school and get no break on my property taxes for private vouchers, so some private school is getting a free ride. We don't know whether private schools are "abysmal" or not because their data isn't shared. There are a lot of people who graduated from public schools who are doing just fine and you benefit from their education. Many people who are critical of public schools, especially in Iowa, have no clue what they are talking about. Most of the top schools in the state are public schools. If you want to see a category of schools with an abysmal record, look at private for profit schools.
I lived near Baltimore for ten years and the performance of public schools there was abysmal, as was Washington DC. For whatever reasons, too many public schools are low performing, expensive, and resistant to change. Something must give. Why is there such fear of multiple approaches to solving public schools deficiencies? Why are we clinging so tightly to a flawed, low performance educational model.
For example, my two kids were educated at home, learned multiple languages fluently (Russian, Turkish, and in the case of my daughter, Arabic and ASL), all at a tiny fraction of the public schools’ price per child. Both graduated from college and one completed a Masters in an allied health field. Our home school had a 100% success rate at producing kids who were university ready. But they also learned an array of practical skills that public schools no longer provide, at no cost to the public schools that have received 45 years of property tax proceeds from me.
It seems to me the bigger the city public schools the poorer the performance. But they say always say 'more money will cure the problem'. I know soo many home schooled and they all seem to excel.
I understand your concerns as well. I recently voted yes on a bond for a new school in our district because I understand the need for educating our children. But honestly, are we satisfied with the education we are paying for? I’m not. How can we improve it? Let’s try some different approaches. Some will fail, but there is always the possibility of breakthroughs.
I believe people of good will can reach beyond partisan and ideological differences to learn what is best for our kids and ultimately, for all of us.
Certainly will as they do forensic audits to find out what classified documents the Russians lifted from Hillary’s computers and when they investigate the uranium deals she did with the Russians.
Our governor steals from the poor to give to the rich, but that has always been her and her minions plan. However, I’m more concerned about the resulting hostilities, anger, envy and/or jealousy…especially if modeled by adults… from both sides of the issue, impacts our young kids and teens, still maturing, developing and finding their way. The kids haven’t created the problem, let’s try to remember that.
Been that way in Oregon for a while for private and home schooled kids. Here, though, the privates often have their own team sports…it’s usually for extracurriculars such as music and the students are often taking those particular classes.
Maybe an upside is that private school kids participating in public school sports will have a chance to make positive connections and make friendships with others they wouldn’t have had the chance to meet otherwise. In other words, seeing the benefits of public schools they wouldn’t have had the chance to do through their parochial points of view.
They already do

Excellent agree totally

The private schools should be required to pay a fee for each of its students that participate in a public school extracurricular activity.

Interesting. thank you! I had no idea.

Lol.

A whole lotta shady going on.

With the income requirement gone, the only ones benefitting will be those with money. Private schools can choose who they want.

Why, since the parents of those kids pay taxes to support the public schools, is it a problem for them to use the public schools facilities?
The average person pays $210 to $220 per year in taxes that go to public schools. The private school voucher they receive is worth approximately $7500, which more than makes up for it. https://educationdata.org/public-education-spending-statistics?utm_source=chatgpt.com

With Trump as president, being able to speak Russian will probably come in handy some day.
Certainly will as they do forensic audits to find out what classified documents the Russians lifted from Hillary’s computers and when they investigate the uranium deals she did with the Russians.

That said, I agree that if the current legislature created this and the current governor supported this, it likely has nefarious motives.
