I applaud the authors in demonstrating that immigrants can help solve our health care crisis, or more broadly speaking, immigration is valuable for Iowa and good for us and our loved ones. In combatting racial stereotypes and bigotry, it helps to constantly explain the immigration works to our personal benefits, let alone to the community at large.
This is a masterful presentation that focuses on a growing problem which impacts all Americans, and does not stray into rabbit holes, side kerfluffle, or non sequitur nonsense. Thank you for this essential information, delivered with clarion clarity.
Thanks John! This means a lot. You have been doing great work for so long. I see you have a substack now. Would you like to be part of the Iowa Podcasters' Collaborative? We promote each other.
I agree totally. everyone needs workers and immigrants want jobs. some don't want citizenship just a work visa. how can we break congress' stonewalling on this?? that is the answer we need.
As someone who works closely with immigrants and refugees on a daily basis, (in Illinois and Iowa), in my role as an adult ESL instructor, I cannot tell you how passionate I am about this topic, and how glad I am to now know about your writing. I will definitely need to set aside some time to get to work on reading these pieces. Thank you.
I read your Time article and it contains a factual error. In the paragraph that begins “We can take Iowa as a microcosm …” you state a median age of 73. This can’t possibly be correct. I followed your link to the census department and found a report that the median age in the 2020 census was 38.8 years.
Well done, Dr. Bob and Kristie De Peña! Though private sponsorship programs like Welcome Corp are wonderful, we need someone or some entity to be a champion for these efforts and dedicated to both humanitarian and employment needs.

Congrats!
Thank you for posting the Time column. I didn't realize Ottumwa is among Iowa's more diverse communities. Also, good to see Senator Ernst's work.
