I defend the right of Carlson or any other US citizen to question their government and those who run it or seek to run it.

That process of questioning authority is inevitably messy, because democracy is messy.

As for Ukraine, I think the US bears primary blame for what is happening there. I really don't care much about Ukraine either way.

I think the US needs to get its own house in order and stop fomenting wats in places most people couldn't find on a map.

Carlson didn't "sow doubt," as you say, he raised valid questions about vital issues facing America and the world.

I am astonished by your take on Carlson. You seem to be suggesting that asking questions about vital topics is somehow subversive.

That's the sort of "America, love it or leave it" attitude I remember when I marched against Vietnam.

John,

Can't say I ever liked that love it or leave it attitude either, BUT I have wondered recently why some Americans don't move to Uganda where they can ban LGBTQ folks legally. And what makes you think the author was trying to ask Carlson to leave the country?

Out of curiosity, what issues regarding U.S. involvement in Russia-Ukraine war are you most concerned about? Is there some way the U.S. can turn a blind eye and become thoroughly isolationist without harming all of Europe and the entire Pacific rim? How is what Putin/Russia is doing a benefit to all the consumers of Ukrainian foods and feeds?

Just saw Bob Leonard's response.... and am also curious how you can defend Carlson himself.

We'll just have to disagree. Carlson's tactics of "just asking questions" has allowed him to sow misinformation for years. It's not "somehow subversive," it's absolutely subversive. There is nothing wrong with asking questions honestly. He's not doing that. He's asking them cynically to manipulate opinion. He aligns with totalitarians and undermines democracy around the world. He's featured regularly on Russia State TV to help Putin convince his populace their cause is just. If Ukraine falls it will be a disaster. We need borders to stand. Carlson is an admitted liar about the 2020 election results, yet continues his lies. This has nothing to do with "America, love it or leave it." It's about defending democracy. Thanks.

Actually I was more than merely astonished by this article.

I was offended enough to cancel my subscription.

"sow misinformation" is a phrase that reminds me of how reactionary authority figures used to denounce "outside agitators."

You say Carlson is "featured regularly on Russia State TV to help Putin convince his populace their cause is just."

You sound like some FBI agent reporting on MLK's "subversive" activities.

I'm not an expert on Putin but lying and misinforming about science and medicine is both serious and dangerous and those guys are shameless.

Always clear eyed, rural culture "get it done" coverage. Quick read. Every word counts. Thanks for keeping those of us "in the room" who couldn't be there in person.

Thanks Bob. Great write up that was very informative. Not the type of deeper analysis found much anymore in disappearing general media. I was wondering where the Anti-Ukraine Republicans were being cultivated.

Great coverage! Putin appears to have nearly the entire Republican Party in his grasp. Perhaps this is what Kruschev meant by America destroying itself from within?
