It's a great piece. The effort and scholarship that went into it are remarkable. We need more people like Jon who take academic work and put it into the public sphere.
Great article by Mr. Lauck. I grew up on a farm east of Sioux City. My parents subscribed to both the Des Moines Register and the Sioux City Journal. My five siblings and I would fight for the comics after we got off the school bus, and all of us became voracious readers. I am so sad by the demise of great newspapers across the country. I read the Register, NYT and WP daily, but there is a huge lack of coverage of the events throughout Iowa.
Agreed. The comics in color on Sunday were always the first thing my sisters and I looked at on Sunday mornings. I miss the "Big Peach" too. Lauck is amazing. Seems like he turns out another great book every couple of years.
Detroit also has a newer paper worth reading, Detroit Metro Times with a circulation of 50,000. Check it out. In Michigan, The Holland Sentinel tries to hold feet to the fire. My niece is the editor of the Dubuque Telegraph Herald. The Cedar Rapids Gazette is pretty good. My family has been on the cover of the Burlington Beacon twice! What I am saying is, there's hope and also a myriad of papers to read. I do miss the Register of old. I subscribe to keep it alive though.
Thank you. I have the PDF saved and I am looking forward to reading it.
