Bon, this is one of the simplest, most profound calls to action I have read. I found myself listing and matching my own experience and values as I read, and feeling that elusive hope—hope for awakening to the community that is in front of us if we have the courage to show up. There is no time to lose. It is incumbent on each of us to find our voices and actions in creating the place in which we want to live. Thank you for offering us a path.
Excellent point about values first, then policy. My fear is not understanding how the majority of Iowans’ values are apparently so different from my own. Is it an inward focus vs outward focus? Past vs future? Fear vs confidence?
Thanks Dave. I think most deeply share our values. I just think they have been misled by Fox News, WHO radio and more that the "Christian" right is actually Christian, and patriotic, when they aren't. Most people don't look very deeply.
My mind hasn't given up but my unpredictable health prevents me from doing much that I would like to do. However, I still manage to speak up and try to encourage my more active friends to continue to speak out and actually do some things in this Tulip Time obsessed community besides posting pictures on Facebook.
I agree with most of what you say here but strongly feel it is the responsibility of any political party and all Americans to become actively involved in supporting these values, not just the Democratic Party. The loss of these values is what has the Republican Party in such disarray and leading them down such a destructive path. We all need to unite and not continue to be so divided.

Thank you Virginia! Love this comment...
Sorry Bob (not Bon), phone typing is hazardous.

Helen, you have always spoke boldly and courageously in your conservative town. Thank you.
Thanks for this “recipe “! We need to use it over here in South Dakota to deal with our own MAGA governor!
Thank you George! I'm not sure who has the worse Governor, but I don't believe Kim has put down a dog she doesn't like. Yet!

That would be wonderful Carolyn!
Wise words from a well rounded man.
Love the anthropologist point of view in all you do.
Wish everyone put as much thought into things as you do. Thanks
A roadmap to positive action and personal empowerment.
Thank you. This is so right (left!).
This piece is so profound, timely, and energizing! I love this part - it offers hope and encouragement:
“What’s your identity and what has informed it? Be proud of it. Use it to help move progressive ideas forward. You matter. Your experiences matter.”
Thank you. Thank you.
Thanks Joan. You highlight these values every day, and particularly with your leadership on the school board.
Thank you!
